About PLC

Helping boost practical life skills
Share ideas. Make positive change

‘PLC’ = Positive Life Courses

🤝 Local people helping local people
📘 We create practical life skills courses
🧑‍🤝‍🧑 We equip local people to run them

📍 Courses are in local communities
🔄 We enable, instead of running everything centrally – so more people can access courses close to home

We provide:
📦 Ready-to-use course content
🗂️ Simple, structured session plans
🧭 Guidance and support for hosts & Delivery Centres

Each course is:
💬 Discussion-based (no pressure)
🛠️ Practical and easy to apply
👥 Designed for small groups

🏡 People learn best in familiar settings
😊 Local settings feel more comfortable

💬 Small groups enable real discussion
🤝 Strong connections develop

Courses run in Delivery Centres within local communities

Positive Life Courses support communities by sharing practical knowledge that helps people improve their everyday lives

Because courses run in local communities, they also help to:
🏡 strengthen community connections
🤝 encourage mutual support
📚 share knowledge more widely

They are guided by volunteer Hosts, who help highlight key ideas from the course material, encourage discussion and share personal experiences

No qualifications or experience is required. Learning is shared not lectured

People learn from each other. Course material contains the knowledge, so local people can help others learn

This enables knowledge to spread through communities in a simple and scalable way

Local people helping local people

Our aim: growing impact (like a snowball gaining momentum) – small beginnings building into something much bigger

As more people take part, the benefits extend further into the community. We create a multiplying effect: learning is shared, confidence grows and benefits extend well beyond each course

🏠 A local venue where courses are run
…. (we prefer the term ‘hosted’) this can

At PLC, we keep things simple:
We create high-quality course content, making it easy for others to use.
Delivery Centres bring these courses to life in their own communities

Who covers the cost of running local courses?

Delivery Centres handle all practical arrangements (& costs), including (if applicable) venue costs, printing, refreshments & other operational expenses

To keep things clear and consistent, Delivery Centres agree to:

💸 Not charge people to attend courses
👥 Offer in-person format (if possible)

📘 Use the course content as provided
…. (no edits)
🤝 Take responsibility for local delivery

Centres have the freedom to run courses how it’s best for their community:
🧭 Local people understand local needs
⚡ Decisions can be made quickly
🌍 Courses can run in multiple places

PLC is not a top-down organisation.
It’s a growing network of Delivery Centres, each playing an important role in sharing practical life skills

Each Delivery Centre manages its own delivery and day-to-day decisions. This keeps learning local and personal & enables local people to help local people

So, for example, Delivery Centres (& their Hosts) decide:
– how long each session of a course lasts
– the number of sessions for each course
– course material to be printed for attendees
– course material to be provided as a PDF

A Host helps guides a course

Their role is to:
📖 highlight ideas in course material
💬 encourage discussion
&
🗣 share personal experiences or stories
🤝 create a friendly learning space

No need for qualifications or training.
All knowledge is in the course material.
Learning is shared not lectured

The role is simply about helping people explore the ideas together.
Many people find it a rewarding way to support their community

If you’d like to explore the thinking behind PLC in more detail, you can read our short guide on how our courses support wellbeing and mental health

We aim to create a welcoming, supportive space in everything we do

We are committed to being:

– encouraging
– respectful
– inclusive
– practical

Courses are for everyone, whatever their background, experience, age etc

Being ‘positive’ is not about perfection —
it’s about making steady, practical improvements. It means being:

– constructive
– resilient
– supportive of others
– open to learning and change

A ‘positive life’ is about more than one thing. It can be:

– uplifting, hopeful, wholesome
– confident, upbeat, productive
&
– helpful, worthwhile, enthusiastic
– supportive, prudent & forward-looking

The PLC ‘unlocked padlock’ symbol reflects a simple but powerful idea: that there’s real potential in every person, often just waiting to be unlocked

Many challenges people face in everyday life are not due to a lack of ability, but a lack of guidance or confidence

With the right practical support, people can grow in ways that genuinely change how they approach life

PLC’s Founder had a dream in which he saw a path and alongside it was a series of unlocked padlocks. He used this picture to produce the PLC image

Each unlocked padlock represents a step forward: an insight, shift in thinking, a skill developed, or a barrier overcome

Small changes, over time, can lead to meaningful progress

Through our course material – and the local courses that bring it to life – we aim to help unlock that potential in a practical and accessible way

PLC is not therapy or formal training —
it is practical, discussion-based learning designed to support everyday life

PLC was founded by Nick Waters, with a vision: to make practical, life-changing learning accessible to everyone; however, it is not a solo effort

A small Leadership Group supports the development of courses, direction and future planning – bringing a range of perspectives so that decisions are thoughtful, balanced and sustainable

A future where every community has access to practical life skills — where local people can easily learn, share knowledge & support one another

Our hope is to see PLC in or near every town in the UK & one day in communities around the world

🏛️ We plan to set up a charitable
…. organisation (CIO)
🌱 This will oversee & grow PLC
…. and support Delivery Centres

The structure will enable expanding
our reach and increase the long-term
impact of the courses

Course materials and this website are stewarded to protect their quality & so they remain available for the long term

This structure allows PLC to grow in a way that is both sustainable and true to its original purpose, while enabling future expansion through a dedicated charitable organisation

The materials and website are held within a dedicated structure that safeguards their long-term use and integrity and are made available to support the work of PLC and its future charitable organisation
